Mizuki Shigeru Road (Sakaiminato, Tottori)
水木しげるロード(鳥取県境港市)
A shopping street in Sakaiminato, Tottori, the hometown of manga artist Shigeru Mizuki, lined with bronze statues of yōkai.
What is it?
Along the roughly 800 meters from Sakaiminato Station to the Honmachi arcade stand many bronze statues of yōkai, centered on characters from GeGeGe no Kitarō such as Kitarō and Nezumi-Otoko. It opened in July 1993 with 23 statues and has grown ever since.
A turning point
Japanese towns once used novels, films and TV dramas for local promotion but were hesitant about manga and anime. Sakaiminato's success with this road helped change that.
Before you go
Most of these spots are ordinary towns, homes and schools. Stay off private property, keep noise down, and be considerate when taking photos.
