God of War
ゴッド・オブ・ウォー
A hardened warrior and his son embark on a final journey across Norse mythology to honor his fallen wife.
What is it?
God of War reimagines Kratos, the series' protagonist, as a grizzled father teaching his son to survive a cruel world. When his wife dies, Kratos promises to scatter her ashes at the peak of Muspelheim. The journey forces him to confront not just the monsters of Norse mythology but his own rage and capacity for change. His son, Atreus, gradually discovers his true heritage—he is a god, and Kratos has hidden this truth to protect him. The narrative unfolds through their relationship: terse conversations gradually warming into genuine affection, arguments revealing character, and quiet moments between battles that ground the myth in genuine emotion.
How it plays
Combat centers on Kratos' two primary weapons: the Leviathan Axe (enchanted with ice) and the Blades of Chaos (steeped in fire). Switching between them mid-combo keeps encounters dynamic. Atreus provides support, firing arrows and chanting incantations to weaken enemies or freeze them in place. Puzzle-solving breaks up combat, with environmental manipulation creating pathways and exposing secrets. A slow-motion ability called Hyperion Might—tied to Kratos' healing—introduces tactical depth: use it to recover health or unleash devastating offense. The camera stays close to Kratos' shoulder, creating an intimate perspective that makes dodging incoming attacks feel visceral and personal.
Why it succeeded
God of War represents a complete transformation of a beloved franchise. Rather than retreading the Greek mythology of earlier games, director Eric Williams and his team reimagined Kratos as a man learning to be a father, drawing direct inspiration from The Road and other fatherhood narratives. The result is a game that moved people to tears. It won Game of the Year at nearly every major awards ceremony, and its follow-up, God of War Ragnarök, has sustained the momentum. The series proved that established franchises could evolve without losing their soul.
