Grand Theft Auto V
グランド・セフト・オートV
An open-world crime saga told through three intertwining protagonists, each bringing their own moral code to a sprawling Los Santos heist.
What is it?
Grand Theft Auto V weaves together the stories of three men whose lives collide in the fictional city of Los Santos. Michael De Santa is a retired bank robber living quietly in the suburbs until his past catches up with him. Trevor Philips, a volatile former cargo pilot, is struggling to keep his small business afloat. Franklin Clinton, a young street hustler, finds himself dragged into their orbit. The narrative structure—playable from each character's perspective—was entirely new to the series and allowed players to experience how the same events looked different depending on who was holding the controller. The game world cycles through day and night on a 24-hour clock, creating a living, breathing city to explore and exploit.
How it plays
Players switch between the three protagonists as the story demands, each bringing unique abilities to the table. When planning a bank heist, players choose their approach: go in stealthily or kick down the door with guns blazing. During shootouts, the cover system becomes essential—ducking behind walls and returning fire with precision determines survival. Driving physics feel weighty without becoming sluggish, and each character excels at different driving styles thanks to special abilities: Michael can slow time while driving, Trevor gains damage resistance, and Franklin can trigger slow-motion while behind the wheel. Between story missions, players can invest in properties, customize weapons, build character skills, and participate in side missions that reveal the city's character.
Why it succeeded
The three-protagonist structure was bold and executed flawlessly. The writing gave each character genuine depth—their relationships evolve, they argue, they care for each other despite themselves. The world's density impressed: Los Santos felt lived-in, with random events unfolding constantly. A decade after release, GTA V remained among the most-played games globally. The announcement of Grand Theft Auto VI in 2024 confirmed the series shows no sign of slowing down. The game fundamentally reshaped expectations for what open-world storytelling could achieve.
