What is it?

Marvel's Spider-Man places players in the suit as Peter Parker, a seasoned hero balancing responsibility between his superhero life and his crumbling personal world. His beloved Mary Jane has moved on, his best friend Harry is in hiding, and the mysterious Mr. Negative—a mob boss with reality-warping powers—threatens to plunge New York into chaos. The narrative doesn't shy away from Peter's failures: he loses battles, makes poor choices, and faces real consequences. Yet the core remains hopeful. The city is vast, rendered in loving detail, with Manhattan's familiar streets serving as the playground for acrobatic combat and zip-lining exploration.

How it plays

Web-slinging through New York is an absolute pleasure. Timing button presses to launch from buildings creates a rhythm that feels natural, and the momentum model rewards skillful play—launch too early and Spider-Man plummets; time it perfectly and he arcs gracefully between skyscrapers. Combat rewards understanding enemy patterns: dodge an incoming punch, counter with a powerful blow, then leap to a perch and assess the situation. New gadgets and suit upgrades add layers to both exploration and combat. Side missions—stopping car thieves, solving crime scenes, rescuing citizens—fill the world with purpose. Photo mode lets players capture breathtaking moments from their own perspective.

Why it succeeded

Marvel's Spider-Man proved superhero games could work without a Hollywood script and A-list budget. The emotional core—Peter's struggle between being a hero and being human—resonated deeply. The game inspired two sequels that have cemented Insomniac Games as the definitive voice for Spider-Man games. The web-swinging mechanic alone has inspired countless imitators, but none have quite captured the grace of Insomniac's implementation. The game represents peak superhero storytelling in interactive media.
