What is it?

Horizon Zero Dawn presents a lush, overgrown future where humanity has reverted to a tribal existence and massive mechanical creatures roam the land. Aloy, a skilled hunter born into a tribe that shuns her, ventures into a dangerous world seeking answers about her origins. The game's premise—nature reclaiming a world destroyed by machines—creates a visually stunning backdrop for exploration and combat. Aloy must learn the weaknesses of each creature type: some are weak to fire, others to ice. The world reveals its secrets to curious players: ancient databases hint at the pre-apocalypse civilization, lore items tell fragmented stories, and environmental details weave together a rich history.

How it plays

Combat demands preparation and observation. Before engaging a mechanical creature, players scan it to reveal weak points and attack patterns. Aloy can craft traps, place explosives, and use a variety of projectile weapons to exploit these weaknesses. Every fight feels like a small puzzle to solve rather than reflexive button-mashing. When not in combat, players explore a verdant world filled with climbing challenges, machine sites to clear, and story threads to uncover. A grappling hook, traps, and environmental hazards become tools for progression. Dialogue choices are limited, but relationships with supporting characters deepen through interactions and story beats.

Why it succeeded

Horizon Zero Dawn proved that a woman could carry a major action game. Aloy's journey from outcast to hero resonated globally. The game's world—blending nature and technology—was visually distinctive in a crowded market. The mechanical creature designs were innovative and memorable. A sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, expanded the world further. The original's success demonstrated that players cared less about who held the controller and more about the quality of the story and gameplay. Guerrilla Games created something unique that spawned an entirely new IP destined to compete with gaming's biggest franchises.
