What is it?

Black Ops III plants players in the near future where soldiers are augmented with cybernetic enhancements. The campaign follows a custom-created soldier through various military operations, but the focus is clearly multiplayer. Across multiple maps, teams of players battle for control, domination, or survival against enemy players. The cybernetic theme introduces special abilities—a tactical visor that highlights enemies, a power core that increases damage, and other tools that add tactical depth. A Zombies mode provides a separate co-op experience where players fend off waves of undead. The futuristic setting allows weapon designers to create entirely new tools beyond what soldiers carry in contemporary shooters.

How it plays

Multiplayer matches reward familiar shooter fundamentals: aim, positioning, and awareness. Maps are designed with multiple routes and chokepoints that encourage different tactical approaches. Special abilities charge during play and activate on command, providing brief powerful advantages. Zombies mode requires cooperation: players must survive increasingly difficult waves of enemies, managing ammunition, securing power-ups, and activating doors to new areas. The campaign, while present, is often overshadowed by multiplayer's competitive focus. Progression systems—weapon attachments, perks, scorestreaks—create long-term goals beyond individual matches.

Why it succeeded

Call of Duty remains the biggest shooter franchise due to consistent execution. Black Ops III released at a time when the franchise was experimenting with futuristic settings, an approach that divided opinion. Some loved the high-tech abilities; others preferred the grounded military aesthetic. Regardless, the gameplay remained tight and the community remained engaged. It sold 15 million copies and maintained a healthy player base for years. The game represents a safe franchise entry: not revolutionary, but polished and multiplayer-focused in exactly the way fans expect.
